How can we build a stronger European Folk Music Sector?

From Tradition to Market: How Can We Build a Stronger European Folk Music Sector?

European folk music is more international than ever. Artists collaborate across borders, new networks are emerging, and festivals are playing an increasingly important role as meeting places for professional development and audience growth. At the same time, funding schemes, support mechanisms, and industry structures remain largely organized on a national basis.

This seminar examines the most significant trends shaping the European folk music sector today and asks how we can build stronger networks, markets, and collaborations across national borders. Drawing on initiatives such as Supertraditional, which brings together artists from several countries under a single label, we explore how new models of collaboration challenge established structures and create new opportunities for international visibility and audience development.

The seminar opens with a keynote presentation from the international music press on developments in European folk music, followed by a panel discussion featuring artists, presenters, and industry professionals on the barriers that still stand in the way of a more connected European folk music landscape.

Are new Nordic initiatives part of the solution, or does folk music need stronger European structures in order to thrive in the future?

Current systems for grants, rights administration, and taxation are primarily national, while the sector itself operates across borders.
