FIRO
Showcase 2017
FIRO consists of Mari Midtli, Øyvind Sandum, Bjørn Kåre Odde and Mads Erik Odde. These are versatile musicians, all of whom have made their mark both as soloists and in different constellations over the past few years. Mari, with her clear and beautiful voice, won the talent contest Toneprisen in 2015, and has also won prizes at Landskappleiken (Norwegian National Folk Music Competition). Mari has also been a soloist with The Norwegian Radio Orchestra and with The Trondheim Soloists.
Øyvind and the Odde brothers are also award-winning musicians, who have also walked away with many of the top prizes at the most prestigious folk music competitions. The three of them have played together for many years in different constellations, whilst individually also involved in various other projects. When the opportunity arose for Mari to form a group with the Odde brothers and Sandum, it didn’t take long for Firo to be established. The group had its first concert in the spring of 2015.
The music FIRO plays is based on the traditional vocal folk music from Gudbrandsdalen, with elements from the instrumental tradition. FIRO has found old songs, and plays them in a new and exciting way. Much of their repertoire comes from old archive recordings and notated music, and the quartet is eager to show this music to the rest of the world. Each member of the group plays several different instruments, leading to a wide variety within the group’s sound and arrangements. They released their debut album, Arv og Slarv, in May this year, which can be bought at Folkelarm.
